Addressing hunger to strengthen health and community resilience

Action Against Hunger is an international charity committed to saving the lives of children and their families, and helping communities build a future free from hunger and malnutrition. They work in more than 50 countries around the world, delivering life-saving programmes that tackle the causes and effects of hunger – including poor nutrition, lack of clean water, unsafe sanitation, and food insecurity – so families have the foundation they need to thrive.

Tackling hunger and malnutrition around the world

Hunger and malnutrition affect millions of people globally, particularly in low-income and crisis-affected regions. Action Against Hunger focuses on predicting, preventing and treating life-threatening hunger, with a special emphasis on children’s health and resilience.

Their work includes:

  • Nutrition support: identifying and treating malnutrition in children so they can regain strength and continue to grow and learn.
  • Clean water and sanitation (WASH): delivering safe water, improved sanitation and hygiene education to help prevent disease and support long-term health.
  • Food security and livelihoods: helping families build sustainable access to nutritious food and income-generating opportunities.
  • Emergency response: providing rapid, life-saving aid during conflicts, climate disasters and displacement crises.

Across programmes worldwide, Action Against Hunger reached tens of millions of people with critical support in 2024 alone.

Why this matters for learners and teachers

Good nutrition and healthy communities are foundational to education. Children who are well-nourished are more able to learn, concentrate and thrive in school – and teachers working in communities with strong health and food systems are better positioned to teach effectively.

While Action Against Hunger’s work isn’t exclusively educational, it addresses the basic needs that make learning possible and supports families and schools in environments where hunger would otherwise block access to education.
