Our support for Room to Read
School of TEFL supports Room to Read in their mission to create a world free from illiteracy and gender inequality.
Transforming lives through education
Room to Read is a global charity dedicated to improving literacy and gender equality in education for children in low-income communities. Their programs focus on creating lifelong readers, supporting girls to complete secondary school, and providing essential life skills to succeed beyond the classroom.
Since their founding, Room to Read has partnered with communities in over 20 countries, reaching millions of children. By addressing systemic barriers to education, they are building a world where every child, regardless of their circumstances, can unlock their full potential through the power of learning.
Room to Read's education work
Education is a powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty, yet millions of children worldwide lack access to quality learning opportunities. Room to Read is looking to change that by delivering innovative distance learning programs that don’t depend on internet connectivity. Instead, they use accessible tools such as radio broadcasts, telephone mentoring, television programs, and printed materials to ensure every child has the opportunity to learn.
Their team is made up of local nationals who live and work within the communities they serve. With a deep understanding of local cultures, community needs, and strong government partnerships, they are able to deliver education using the most effective tools and media available in each region.
For example…
In Lebanon, they launched a two-year project to print and distribute 60 original Arabic storybooks to roughly 1,800 non-formal education centres. In India, their Literacy Program is the country’s only children’s education program that develops both literacy skills and reading habits, benefitting over 18 million children. In Zambia, their education program has supported nearly 2000 girls since 2008.
