Where Will I Take the Course?
You’ll start the course online, so you can study from anywhere. For your 9 or 10 days in Cambodia, the training centre is located in Daun Penh District – the commercial heart of Phnom Penh – just a 10-minute walk from the city’s vibrant Riverside area, known for its nightlife and energy.
You’ll be surrounded by street food stalls, coffee shops, restaurants, and local businesses – a lively, central place to live, study, and explore Cambodia’s capital.

You’ll learn how to plan and deliver effective English lessons. The online and in-person parts of the course together cover:

What to Expect
Online training
Once you’ve enrolled and paid your deposit, we’ll notify AVSE-TESOL, who will review your application before confirming your place. They may invite you for a Zoom chat first.
(If for any reason we or they can’t offer you a place, your deposit will be fully refunded.)
You’ll stay in regular contact with both the School of TEFL team and AVSE-TESOL in the lead-up to the course.
The remaining course fee is paid directly to AVSE-TESOL around two weeks before the course starts – though if you enrol later, that’s no problem.
For the online training, you’ll have access to AVSE’s Learning Management System (LMS), where you’ll have up to 6 months to complete the theory part of the course (though most trainees complete it in 6-10 weeks). You’ll have exactly the same content, assessment tasks and highly qualified TESOL trainers as if you were doing the intensive in-class course.
You’ll gain a solid foundation in English language teaching theory, learning about the language itself, teaching skills and techniques, classroom management strategies, lesson planning and much more. By the end of the online training, you’ll have a strong grasp of the theory behind Teaching English as a Second Language.
On-site training in Cambodia
The practical part of the course takes place at AVSE’s training centre in Phnom Penh. You’ll have the opportunity to observe experienced teachers giving real classes, and jump straight into planning, teaching and evaluating 6 hours of classes with real students. You’ll have plenty of guidance and support throughout this process, with feedback sessions from your trainer and lesson planning assistance, and you’ll finish the 9 or 10 days with invaluable hands-on experience.
Coursework and assessment
In addition to the practical teaching, you’ll be completing coursework and assessments throughout both parts of the course. This includes self-evaluation of your teaching, building a portfolio of teaching resources (which you will take with you after the course), short-answer question assignments, a short research report, and creating a detailed learning plan for one student. The assessment process is designed to prepare you for real-life teaching scenarios you’ll encounter when you start paid employment.By the end of the course, you’ll have the knowledge, skills, and practical experience you need to confidently pursue a career in English language teaching.
Accommodation in Cambodia
The hybrid course comes with 9 nights free hotel accommodation in Phnom Penh. The hotels are all close to the training centre in Daun Penh district.

What can I do with my TEFL certificate from School of TEFL in Cambodia?
The School of TEFL course trains you to teach in Cambodia or anywhere in the world. Cambodia has a high demand for English teachers, especially in larger cities and expanding regional centres. Many graduates find work shortly after completing the course, particularly those who are proactive and flexible with location.

Course and Accreditation
Who is the course accredited by?
The course is Australian government accredited under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF – RTO: 45373, Course: 11245NAT), giving graduates a Certificate IV in TESOL. This certification is equivalent to CELTA and the Trinity CertTESOL.
How much does the course cost?
The course costs $998. You’ll pay a deposit of $250 when you enrol and the balance directly to the partner centre approximately two weeks before the start of the course.

This is an intensive, university-level course that requires dedication and hard work! It’s not a ‘shortcut’ TEFL course. However, with your commitment, you’ll emerge from it well-prepared and highly motivated to start your teaching journey.
Will I teach actual students on the course?
Yes, you’ll teach actual local ESL students for 5 or 6 hours. These students will be in small groups or individuals.
Will I learn how to teach both adults and children?
Yes, the course trains you how to teach both adults and young learners. You’ll learn core teaching skills applicable to all age groups, along with specific strategies for teaching young learners.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed on your 6 hours of teaching practice, and on your reflections of observing experienced teachers. The assessment of teaching practice includes the production of detailed lesson plans.
You’ll also be assessed on a portfolio of teaching and testing resources, a short research project and a completed workbook, amongst other things. There is no final exam.
Our partner centre employs qualified assessors working under strict Australian Government compliance standards to ensure that you are ready to teach as soon as you’ve completed the course.

Enrolment and Practicalities
How early should I book?
You can enrol for and start the online part of the course at any time. Once you’ve started, you’ll have plenty of time to book in for the practical part of the course in Cambodia.
Can I do the practical component in my local community instead?
Yes – you can choose to do the practical teaching component in your local community instead of travelling to Cambodia if you prefer.
What should I bring/wear for the course?
For your 9 or 10 days in Cambodia, you’ll need a laptop. If you don’t have one, our partner centre can hire one for you on request for the duration of the course, for a very reasonable fee and a refundable deposit.
When teaching or observing classes, you need to wear professional, business clothing (no jeans, shorts, flip-flops or t-shirts). When not teaching or observing, you can wear casual clothes.
Do I need to do anything to prepare for the course?
You don’t need to prepare in any way. However, we would recommend taking our add-on Grammar Course (free when you enrol). You’ll learn grammar on the course, but this will give you a head start.
If you want to read about English teaching before the course, Learning Teaching by Jim Scrivener and The Practice of English Language Teaching by Jeremy Harmer are both good options. Again, this is optional, as you’ll learn all you need to know about the theory and practice of teaching on the course itself, but some trainees find it helpful to be familiar with some of the terms and concepts before starting the course.
Do I need to speak Khmer to take the course?
No – TEFL courses show you how to teach without needing to know the language of your students. If you go on to teach in an English speaking country, you’ll probably have classes of mixed nationality/first language, so using the students’ first language isn’t an option anyway!
What kind of job help and support is provided?
Our partner centre offers practical job search support, including help with creating a CV tailored to the local job market, mock interviews, and guidance on employment conditions and agreements. You’ll also be referred to partner schools in their network when relevant opportunities arise. Throughout the course, you’ll take part in sessions focused on job preparation and have access to the partner centre’s knowledgeable team for advice.

Before, during, and after the course, we’re here to offer advice on CVs, job applications, interview techniques, and developing your TEFL career. Teaching in Cambodia
What are the requirements to teach English in Cambodia?
To teach in Cambodia, you must:
– be 18 years of age
– have a government accredited TEFL qualification
– pass a basic health check as part of the process to obtain a work permit
– have a passport valid for at least 12 months
– produce a clean background check within the last six monthsA Bachelor’s degree is not a requirement.
Do I need a degree to teach English in Cambodia?
No, you don’t need a degree to teach in Cambodia.
What type of visa do I need to teach English in Cambodia?
To enter Cambodia you need either a T Class visa or an Ordinary Visa E Class.
If you don’t plan to teach in Cambodia after the course, a T Class visa is sufficient. It’s valid for 30 days and can be renewed once for a further 30 days without leaving the country.
If you plan to stay and teach in Cambodia after the course, it’s best to enter on an Ordinary Visa E Class. These are also valid for 30 days and can be obtained from a Cambodian embassy or at the port of entry. They can be extended once for one, three, six or twelve months. If you extend for six or twelve months, you’ll be able to leave and re-enter the country as many times as you like, and open a bank account in Cambodia. When you secure a teaching job, employers in Cambodia often assist with the process of obtaining a work permit and extending your visa. This depends on the school’s policies and your contract.
If you enter Cambodia on a T class visa, you may need to leave the country briefly to obtain an Ordinary Visa E class prior to transitioning to a Work Permit.
For example, some teachers take a day trip from Phnom Penh to the Vietnam border. This typically costs around $120, including the visa.The government fee for a Work Permit and related visa extension is US $540.00 +/-. Typically, this is a shared cost between the employer and the employee.

What paperwork do I need to bring to teach English in Cambodia?
You should bring your degree certificate (if you have one) and background check with you.

Can non-native English speakers teach English in Cambodia?
Yes, it is possible to teach in Cambodia as a non-native speaker.
What are the typical working conditions when teaching English in Cambodia?
Most full-time English teaching jobs require 20 to 30 classroom teaching hours per week. Working hours are mostly during the day, from Monday to Friday, with at least one day off per week, depending on the employer. Evening and weekend classes are quite rare. Paid holiday and sick leave also depend on the employer. Teaching contracts can be up to 12 months (renewable) and you’ll typically need to commit for a minimum of 3 months.
What types of teaching jobs are available in Cambodia, and where are they?
The majority of job opportunities are in Phnom Penh, with a minimum commitment of 6 months, in international schools and privately owned English language schools. Private tutoring is also possible. There may be some opportunities in regional cities and in more rural locations.
How much will I earn teaching English in Cambodia?
A typical salary for foreign ESL teachers is between $800 and $1200 net per month.
Will I be able to save money teaching English in Cambodia?
Many teachers find that the cost of living in Cambodia is low enough to allow them to save a good portion of their income, depending on their lifestyle and spending habits.
