Guatemala is one of the most beautiful and culturally rich countries in Latin America. Its well-developed economy means there is always a high demand for English teachers. This makes Guatemala an ideal destination to start your TEFL career, while enjoying the beauty and adventure that the country has to offer.
Whether you decide to stay in Guatemala or not, our accredited, hybrid TEFL course qualifies you for thousands of English teaching jobs worldwide, and comes with expert job support.
The course
Our hybrid course combines the flexibility of online study with the benefits of in-person training and practical teaching experience. You’ll complete the first half of the course online through guided self-study, with 10 hours of included tutoring by Zoom with your TEFL Trainer. You’ll then travel to Antigua for 2 weeks to cover the Teaching Methodology and Practical Teaching modules. The course involves a commitment of time and work, and most trainees find it immensely rewarding and attest to an enormous sense of achievement when they complete it. Please read What can I expect? and our FAQ below to learn more about what’s involved. The training centre
For your two weeks in Guatemala, the training centre is just a couple of minutes’ walk from the central plaza, with everything you need within easy reach. It has a beautiful central garden and rooftop terrace, with views of Volcán de Agua.Class size
The average number of students on the practical part of the course is 4-10. Courses tend to get fully booked up to three months in advance.Schedule
You’ll study the online part of the course at your own pace, with guided support from your trainer. We recommend that you complete this part in 4-12 weeks. For the practical part, you can expect to be in class, or observing, planning and teaching lessons for 7-8 hours a day, Monday to Friday. There is also required reading and written assignments to be done outside of the classroom hours. Please see What can I expect? for more detail about the “day to day” of the course.Antigua is known as the “Jewel of Central America”. It’s a captivating blend of colonial heritage and natural beauty. 1500 metres above sea level in the central highlands, the whole city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture and ruins, set against the backdrop of stunning volcanoes, clearly visible from the streets and rooftops.
The heart of Antigua is the Central Plaza (just a few minutes’ walk from our training centre) with open markets, locals in traditional dress and frequent cultural events.
You can spend your free days walking the cobblestone streets and enjoying Guatemala’s renowned coffee and a warm, cloth-wrapped tortilla. Or hike the volcanoes and mountain trails. Or hop on a chicken bus for an authentic tavelling experience. Then enjoy the vibrant nightlife that the city has to offer – you’ll find a whole range of friendly bars, rooftop cafes, clubs, live music and dance, mostly around the Arco de Santa Catalina and near the Central Plaza.
Beyond the city, Guatemala, which literally means the “land of many trees”, has an extraordinarily rich biodiversity and breathtaking landscapes to explore, from Pacific and Caribbean beaches to volcanic lakes and ancient Mayan ruins.
Guatemala is friendly and welcoming, and you’ll be touched by the warmth and hospitality of its people. If you stay to teach here after your TEFL course, you’ll find it a home away from home.
What can I expect?
Online training
Once you’ve enrolled, you’ll gain access to our Learning Management System (LMS) to begin the online part of the course. You’ll complete seven modules through guided self-study, at your own pace, and receive 10 hours of live tutoring via Zoom with your TEFL trainer.
At the same time, we’ll liaise with our partner centre to review your application and confirm your spot on the practical part of the course.
(If for any reason we or the partner centre are unable to offer you a place, you’ll receive a full refund of your deposit payment.)
We recommend allowing 2 to 8 weeks for the online study, but you’ll have up to 6 months if needed. You’ll then have up to 6 months between finishing the online training and starting the practical part of the course in Guatemala, and we recommend keeping this interval as short as possible. You can either choose your Guatemala start date when you enrol or decide later.
While you’re studying online, the School of TEFL team and partner centre will stay in touch, helping you prepare for your trip to Guatemala with advice on visas, documentation, accommodation, and other practicalities, while answering any questions you might have.
You’ll make the balance payment for the course directly to our partner centre around 60 days before the practical part of the course starts. (If you enrol closer to the start date though, that’s no problem).
On-site training in Antigua
When you travel to Guatemala, our partner centre will meet you at the airport (or bus station) and take you to your accommodation. Then your TEFL trainer will see you on the first morning of your practical training, ready to pick up right where you left off in the online modules!
During your two weeks in Guatemala, you’ll cover the Teaching Methodology and Practical Teaching modules. You can expect to be at the training centre for 7-8 hours a day, Monday to Friday, typically from 9am to 4/5pm, with a break for lunch.
Teaching Practice
The practical teaching component is the heart of your TEFL course, giving you invaluable hands-on experience. You’ll teach lessons to both your peer group and real English learners, all observed by your trainer. In the first week, you’ll start with two mini-lessons, along with short workshops designed to help you practise specific teaching techniques and strategies. You’ll also have the opportunity to observe two hours of real classes taught by experienced teachers. In the final week of the hybrid course, you’ll take over a live English class with real, non-native students, and teach 60-minute lessons for 5 days. You’ll have plenty of feedback, guidance and coaching from your trainer throughout this process, allowing you to reflect on your teaching, increase your self-awareness and improve your techniques.Coursework and assessment
You’ll complete coursework and assessments throughout the course. You’ll be assessed on your overall progress and growth as a teacher. The assessment process is designed to prepare you for real-life teaching scenarios you’ll encounter when you start paid employment. You can expect to spend time outside the classroom on assignments, observations and lesson planning. The course challenges you to think creatively and analytically, both in input sessions and during your teaching practice and assignments. By the end, you’ll be well-prepared with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience to confidently pursue a career in English language teaching.

For mini-lessons and practical teaching, you’ll need to dress professionally (smart trousers, skirts, shirts or blouses, and smart shoes). Our partner centre will send you a recommended packing list prior to the course.
Do I need to do anything to prepare for the course?
We would recommend taking our add-on Grammar Course (free when you enrol). You’ll learn grammar on the course itself, but this will give you a head start.

No – TEFL courses show you how to teach without needing to know the language of your students. If you go on to teach in an English speaking country, you’ll probably have classes of mixed nationality/first language, so using the students’ first language isn’t an option anyway!
