What to Expect

Here’s how the course is structured and what you can expect before, during, and after your training.
  • Before the course

Once you’ve enrolled and paid your deposit, we’ll notify The Language House, who will review your application before confirming your place.

(If for any reason we or they can’t offer you a place, your deposit will be fully refunded.)

You’ll stay in regular contact with both the School of TEFL team and The Language House in the lead-up to the course. You’ll get guidance on visas and documentation, help with arranging your accommodation, and support with any questions you have.

The remaining course fee is paid directly to The Language House around 4 weeks before the course starts – though if you enrol later, that’s no problem.

If you’re staying in course-arranged housing, you’ll be met at the airport and taken to your accommodation. On the first morning of the course, your trainer will meet you at the school and help you get settled in.

  • Day to day on the course

    Theory
Each day starts with input sessions from experienced trainers, covering EFL methodology, classroom management, lesson planning, and language awareness. These workshops give you a strong foundation in the theory behind successful English language teaching – and a toolkit of practical techniques to apply in real classrooms.

Sessions typically run from 9:30am to 1pm, with additional workshops and presentations throughout the week, including grammar bootcamp, visa/job guidance, and CV preparation. You’ll also take part in a foreign language learning experience to help you better understand what it’s like to be a language learner.

    Practice
Hands-on teaching practice is at the heart of the course. You’ll start observing real lessons early in the course, and begin teaching your own lessons from the first or second week. Over the 4 weeks, you’ll complete over 14 hours of observed teaching practice with real Czech students at different levels – beginner, intermediate, advanced, and one-to-one business English.

Teaching practice takes place in the evenings (typically 5pm onward), Monday to Wednesday. After each lesson, you’ll receive structured feedback from your trainers and peers to help you reflect, grow, and build your confidence.

You’ll also have daily lesson planning support and access to teaching materials and expert advice from the trainer team.

    Coursework and assessment
Assessment is practical and ongoing. You’ll be evaluated on your lesson planning, teaching practice, professionalism, responsiveness to feedback, and overall development as a teacher.

You’ll also complete a one-to-one teaching project, where you assess a learner’s needs, design and deliver a lesson, and create a short personalised course. Additional coursework may include grammar review tasks, written reflections, and optional add-ons like the Young Learner Teacher (YLT) certificate.

Outside of class time, you can expect to spend several hours each week preparing lessons, reviewing feedback, and working on your teaching project. The course is demanding, but highly supportive – and by the end, you’ll be ready to enter the classroom with real skills and confidence.

  • Accommodation

The Language House offers a range of housing options during your course in Prague. You can choose course-arranged accommodation or find your own – support is available either way.

    Course-arranged housing

    Options include:

    – Private rooms in furnished apartments
    – Shared or private rooms in hotels or hostels
    – Private flats for individuals or couples (limited availability)

All include Wi-Fi, kitchen access, bedding, cleaning before arrival, airport pickup, and a welcome tour. Most housing is 10–20 minutes from the school. Prices range from $425 to $1,400 for the course month.

Housing runs from the Friday before the course to the Sunday after graduation. Extra nights can usually be arranged if needed.

    Finding your own place

You’re welcome to book your own housing (e.g. via Airbnb or Flatio). The Language House can still offer advice if needed.

If you plan to stay in Prague, we advise booking short-term housing for no more than 30 days – you’ll need to switch to long-term accommodation for your visa.

  • After the course

What can I do with my TEFL certificate from School of TEFL in the Czech Republic?

The School of TEFL course trains you to teach in the Czech Republic or anywhere in the world. If you decide to stay in Prague, you’ll find job opportunities in private language schools, preschools, companies, and with private students. Many teachers also find short-term roles in summer camps or intensive weekend programs around the country. Most employers prefer to hire teachers already in Prague, and many graduates secure work within a few weeks of finishing the course.

If you decide to leave the Czech Republic, your TEFL certificate opens up opportunities to teach in dozens of countries worldwide.

Again, the School of TEFL team and the staff at The Language House will provide you with advice and support. We offer guidance on creating a CV tailored to the Czech job market and support in exploring opportunities with local schools, companies, and private clients.

These are the questions we get asked most often. Feel free to get in touch if your question isn't answered here - we're happy to help.
  • Course and Accreditation

    • Who is the course accredited by?

Our course is accredited and moderated by the UK-based body IATQUO (International Accreditation of TESOL Qualifying Organisations). They only accredit TEFL courses, and you may get to meet them in week 4 or 5 of your course.

    • How much does the course cost?

The course costs $1590 USD. You’ll pay a deposit of $477 when you enrol and the balance directly to the partner centre approximately 4 weeks before the start of the course.

      Please note:
These prices may be lower if you see an offer listed on our site or have a discount code.

    • What's included in the course price?

Included in the price of the course are:

      – 4-week, full-time TEFL course
      – 14 hours of observed teaching practice
      – 6 hours observing experienced teachers
      – Pre-course support, including in-house visa assistance
      – Expert tuition from a team of experienced trainers
      – Lifetime job support in Prague and worldwide
      – Accommodation assistance
      – Airport pickup (with course-arranged housing)
      – Access to the Language House graduate network and job forums
      Deposit refund guarantee
      – Add-on Grammar Course
      – Lesson plan subscription

    • How easy/difficult is the course?

This is an intensive, university-level course that requires dedication and hard work! It’s not a ‘shortcut’ TEFL course. However, with your commitment, you’ll emerge from it well-prepared and highly motivated to start your teaching journey.

    • Will I teach actual students on the course?

Yes, you’ll teach actual local ESL students for 14 hours. These students will be in small groups and individuals.

    • How will I be assessed?

You’ll be assessed on your teaching practice, lesson planning, and overall development throughout the course. You’ll also complete a one-to-one teaching project and receive regular feedback and support from your trainers to help you grow and improve.

    • Who is the course suitable for?

The course is suitable for motivated individuals of all ages and backgrounds who want to teach English in the Czech Republic, around the world or online.

  • Enrolment and Practicalities

    • How early should I book?

The course tends to get fully booked up to two or three months in advance, so it’s best to book as early as you can.

    • How many other people will be on the course with me?

There are typically 8–16 trainees on each course.

    • What should I bring/wear for the course?

A laptop for lesson planning is required. You can dress casually and comfortably for your TEFL input sessions, but for teaching practice you’ll need to dress professionally (smart trousers, skirts, shirts or blouses, and smart shoes). Our partner centre will send you a recommended packing list before the course.

    • Do I need to do anything to prepare for the course?

You don’t need to prepare in any way. However, we would recommend taking our add-on Grammar Course (free when you enrol). You’ll learn grammar on the course, but this will give you a head start.

If you want to read about English teaching before the course, Learning Teaching by Jim Scrivener and The Practice of English Language Teaching by Jeremy Harmer are both good options. Again, this is optional, as you’ll learn all you need to know about the theory and practice of teaching on the course itself, but some trainees find it helpful to be familiar with some of the terms and concepts before starting the course.

    • Do I need to speak Czech to take the course?

No – TEFL courses show you how to teach without needing to know the language of your students. If you go on to teach in an English speaking country, you’ll probably have classes of mixed nationality/first language, so using the students’ first language isn’t an option anyway!

    • What kind of job help and support is provided?

During the course, you’ll take part in CV workshops, mock interviews, and job fairs, and receive guidance on finding teaching jobs in Prague and across the Czech Republic. Language schools regularly visit during the course to meet trainees and share current openings. You’ll also get access to an active graduate network, job boards, and lifetime job assistance – whether you plan to stay in Prague or teach abroad after the course.

In addition to the support offered by the partner centre, School of TEFL provides continued guidance and career advice. Before, during, and after your course, we’re here to help with CV preparation, job applications, interview tips, and building your TEFL career. You’re always welcome to reach out by email or phone for personalised support – we’re here to help whenever you need us.

    • What else can The Language House TEFL help with / provide?

Our partner centre will arrange airport pickup if you’re staying in course-arranged housing. You’ll be met at the airport and taken directly to your accommodation. If you’re arriving independently or staying elsewhere, you can opt into the pickup service for a small additional fee.

The Language House team and their in-house visa and support staff can also help with buying a SIM card, using public transport, setting up a local bank account, and other practicalities of settling into life in Prague. You’ll also receive a welcome presentation in your first week covering housing, life in the city, and how to get connected with the local expat community.

  • Teaching in the Czech Republic

    • What are the requirements to teach English in the Czech Republic?

To teach English in the Czech Republic you’ll genearlly need:

      – A recognised TEFL certification
      – Native or near-native English proficiency
      – The legal right to work in the Czech Republic (either EU citizenship or a long-term visa, typically the freelance Živno visa – see below)
      – A professional attitude and the ability to work with a range of learners, from children to business professionals

You don’t need a Bachelor’s degree, although some employers may prefer it. Most schools are happy to hire newly qualified teachers who have completed an in-person TEFL course with teaching practice.

    • Do I need a degree to teach English in the Czech Republic?

A Bachelor’s degree is preferred by some employers but is not a strict requirement.

    • What type of visa do I need to teach English in the Czech Republic?

Most nationalities don’t need a visa to enter the Czech Republic for short stays. You’ll receive a 90-day entry stamp upon arrival if you’re from a visa-exempt country. Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned stay.

If you’re planning to stay and work in Prague after the course and are not an EU citizzen, you’ll need to apply for a long-term visa. The most common option is the Živnostenský list (freelance license), which allows you to work legally for multiple schools and private clients.

The visa process can be complex, but don’t worry – our partner centre works with Visa Guru, an in-house visa agency that will guide you through every step. You’ll receive detailed instructions before the course and full support throughout the process.

If you’re an EU citizen, you don’t need a visa to live or work in the Czech Republic. Some employers may still ask you to register for a Živno license, but the process is usually simpler and can be completed after arrival.

    • What paperwork do I need to bring to teach English in the Czech Republic?

For non-EU citizens planning to stay and work in the Czech Republic, you’ll need:

      – Original birth certificate – with an apostille from your home country
      – Criminal background check – issued within 90 days of your visa appointment, also apostilled
      – High school diploma or university degree – originals or certified copies
      – Vlid passport – must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay
      – Health insurance documentation – Visa Guru can help you set this up
      – Proof of accommodation – this will usually be arranged for you during the course, then updated when you find long-term housing
      – Two passport-sized photos – Czech size (different from standard US/UK sizing!)

      For EU citizens:

You don’t need a visa to live or work in the Czech Republic, but some employers may still ask you to register for a Živnostenský license. The process is simpler than for non-EU citizens, with less documentation required. It can usually be completed after you arrive, with help from Visa Guru.

Our partner centre will guide you through the entire process, including what to prepare before arrival and what can be handled once you’re in Prague.

    • Can non-native English speakers teach English in the Czech Republic?

Yes, it is possible to teach in the Czech Republic as a non-native speaker.

    • What is the hiring period for teaching English in the Czech Republic?

Private language schools recruit year-round, with many hiring actively in August/September and January. Public schools and preschools tend to follow the academic year, recruiting primarily in late summer or early autumn.

Online teaching and freelance tutoring opportunities are available year-round, offering flexibility for teachers who prefer to build their own schedules.

    • What are the typical working conditions when teaching English in the Czech Republic?

In private language schools, most teachers work 20–25 hours of teaching per week, often split across mornings, evenings, and sometimes weekends. You may work with adults, teenagers, or children, depending on the school. Contracts are usually for 9–12 months, especially if you’re working on a freelancer visa (Živnostenský list).

In preschools and public schools, positions are typically full-time with set daytime hours, Monday to Friday. These roles may offer longer contracts and benefits like holiday pay, but often require more paperwork upfront.

You can also teach private students or work online, which gives you more flexibility to set your own schedule and rates. Most private students are motivated adult learners, and many teachers combine private lessons with language school work to create a full schedule.

    • What types of teaching jobs are available in the Czech Republic, and where are they?

Most teaching jobs are in Prague, where there’s high demand in private language schools, preschools, companies, and for private tutoring. These roles cover a wide range of learners – from young children to professionals – and schedules often include mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends.

There are also opportunities in other cities like Brno, Plzeň, and České Budějovice. These areas tend to have fewer teachers, so competition is lower, and cost of living is generally cheaper than in the capital.

Many teachers also combine part-time work across several schools or with private students, and some supplement their income by teaching English online.

    • How much will I earn teaching English in the Czech Republic?

Most new teachers in Prague earn between $1,000 and $1,500 USD per month, depending on how many hours they teach and the type of work they do. This typically covers a mix of lessons at language schools, preschools, companies, and private tutoring.

Many teachers supplement their income with private students, who usually pay higher hourly rates, normally around $20 an hour. With a full schedule and some private work, it’s possible to earn more.

    • What is the cost of living like in Prague / the Czech Republic?

Most teachers in Prague spend between $700 and $1,000 USD per month on living expenses, including rent, food, transport, and leisure. Your exact costs will depend on your lifestyle and housing choice – for example, sharing an apartment can significantly reduce rent.

Prague is generally more affordable than many Western European cities, and with careful budgeting, many teachers are able to live comfortably and still enjoy the city’s culture and travel opportunities.

    Just a heads-up:
Job availability, visa policies, and employer requirements can change.
