Where Will I Take the Course?
You’ll start the course online, so you can study from anywhere. For the practical part, the training centre is located right in the historical centre of Cusco, just a few minutes’ walk from the main plaza, with everything you need within easy reach. It has spacious common areas, 22 classrooms and a snack bar.

What to Expect
Online training
Once you’ve enrolled and paid your deposit, you’ll get access to our Learning Management System (LMS) to begin the online part of the course. You’ll complete seven modules through guided self-study at your own pace, and receive 10 hours of live tutoring via Zoom with your TEFL trainer.
At the same time, we’ll notify Maximo Nivel, who will review your application before confirming your place on the practical component of the course in Peru.
(If for any reason we or they can’t offer you a place, your deposit will be fully refunded.)
We recommend allowing 2 to 8 weeks for the online study, but you’ll have up to 6 months if needed. After that, you’ll have up to 6 more months to begin the practical part of the course in Peru – though we recommend keeping the gap as short as possible. You can either choose your Peru start date when you enrol, or decide later.
While you’re studying online, the School of TEFL team and Maximo Nivel will stay in touch to help you prepare for your trip. You’ll get guidance on visas and documentation, help arranging your accommodation, and support with any other questions you have.
The remaining course fee is paid directly to Maximo Nivel around 60 days before the practical part starts – though if you enrol later, that’s no problem.
On-site training in Peru
When you arrive in Peru, our partner centre will meet you at the airport (or bus station) and take you to your accommodation. Your TEFL trainer will greet you on the first morning of your practical training, ready to pick up where you left off in the online modules.
Over two weeks, you’ll complete the Teaching Methodology and Practical Teaching modules in person. You can expect to be at the training centre for 7–8 hours a day, Monday to Friday — typically from 9am to 4/5pm, with a break for lunch.
Teaching Practice
Practical teaching is at the heart of the course, giving you invaluable hands-on experience. You’ll teach lessons to real English learners, observed by your trainer.In the first week, you’ll start with two mini-lessons and take part in short workshops focused on developing specific techniques and classroom strategies. You’ll also observe two hours of real classes taught by experienced teachers.
In the second week, you’ll take over a live English class with real, non-native students, teaching 60-minute lessons each day for five days. You’ll receive personalised feedback, coaching and guidance from your trainer throughout – helping you reflect on your teaching, develop your skills, and build confidence in the classroom.
Coursework and assessment
The assessment process is designed to prepare you for the real-life challenges of teaching English professionally, and you’ll complete coursework and assessments throughout the course. You’ll be assessed on your overall progress and growth as a teacher.You can expect to spend time outside the classroom on assignments, observations and lesson planning. The course challenges you to think creatively and analytically, both in input sessions and during your teaching practice and assignments. By the end, you’ll be well-prepared with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience to confidently pursue a career in English language teaching.
Accommodation in Peru
There are a number of accommodation options:
Host Family
Most participants stay with a pre-approved Peruvian family in the Cusco area. Our families live 10-25 minutes’ walk or bus ride from the training centre. You can choose a shared or private room. For shared rooms, you are placed with 1-3 other people of the same gender and age group. Breakfast and dinner are included seven days a week. You’ll have a key to the house and are free to come and go as you please, but you must respect the routine and house rules of the family.Student Residence (subject to availability)
Student residence rooms are within a 10-60 minute walk or bus/taxi ride from the training centre. They can be shared or private, with breakfast and dinner included seven days a week. For shared rooms, you are placed with other people of the same gender.Hostel / Hotel

A bus ride to the training centre will typically cost around $1.75. Taxis are more expensive. We recommend budgeting about $5 per day for transport.

What can I do with my TEFL certificate from School of TEFL in Peru?
The School of TEFL course trains you to teach in Peru or anywhere in the world. If you decide to stay in Peru, the relatively low cost of living means many teachers find they can live comfortably on a local teaching salary, depending on their lifestyle and expenses. There is a very high demand for English teachers, due to the rapidly growing economy and tourism industry. Many graduates find teaching opportunities shortly after completing the course, particularly those who are proactive and flexible with job type and location. Peruvian culture holds teachers in high esteem, so you should be prepared to take your role seriously.
Maximo Nivel’s job support includes a specialist job-finding workshop in week 2 of the course, CV preparation, plus guidance on how to connect with language schools and recruitment contacts throughout Latin America. They also often hire several graduates to work at their language institute in Cusco (the same location as your TEFL training centre), depending on performance, availability, and fit.
Where can I teach?
You’ll find job opportunities in Cusco, Lima, Arequipa, Trujillo and Chiclayo, in public schools and in the thousands of private language institutes, working with adults, kids and teens. To work in a public school you’ll need to commit to at least one year, with the hiring period mainly in January and February, following the school year. Language institutes ask for a commitment of between 3 and 12 months and recruit year-round.

This is an intensive, university-level course that requires dedication and hard work. With your commitment, you’ll emerge from it well-prepared and highly motivated to start your teaching journey.
Will I teach actual students on the course?
Yes, you’ll teach actual local ESL students for 5 or 6 hours. These students will be in small groups or individuals.
How will I be assessed?
You’ll be assessed on your practical teaching and complete focused written assignments. You’ll also be assessed on your overall progress and growth as a teacher during the course. You’ll receive detailed feedback and coaching from your trainers throughout the course.

Enrolment and Practicalities
How early should I book?
The practical part of the course tends to get fully booked up to two or three months in advance, so it’s best to book as early as you can.
How many other people will be on the course with me?
There is an average of 8-15 trainees on the practical part of the course.
What should I bring/wear for the course?
For your two weeks in Peru, a laptop for lesson planning is required. You can dress casually and comfortably for your TEFL input sessions. For practical teaching, you’ll need to dress professionally (smart trousers, skirts, shirts or blouses, and smart shoes). Our partner centre will send you a recommended packing list prior to the course.
Do I need to do anything to prepare for the course?
We would recommend taking our add-on Grammar Course (free when you enrol). You’ll learn grammar on the course itself, but this will give you a head start.
Our partner centre has two required texts for the course: How to Teach English (New Edition) by Jeremy Harmer, and Understanding & Using English Grammar (5th Edition) by Betty Schrampfer Azar. These will be available to you digitally at no cost. You can also purchase print versions yourself or through our partner centre. If you purchase them through our partner centre, you’ll receive them on arrival.
Other good options (though not required) to familiarise with some of the terms and concepts before starting the course are Learning Teaching by Jim Scrivener and The Practice of English Language Teaching by Jeremy Harmer.
Do I need to speak Spanish to take the course?
No – TEFL courses show you how to teach without needing to know the language of your students. If you go on to teach in an English speaking country, you’ll probably have classes of mixed nationality/first language, so using the students’ first language isn’t an option anyway!
What kind of job help and support is provided?
Our partner centre offers ongoing job search support. During the course (either online or while on-site in Peru), you’ll take part in a job-finding workshop and receive guidance on preparing your CV, identifying local job opportunities, and connecting with schools and recruiters across Latin America. The partner centre may also hire a small number of TEFL graduates each month to work at their language institute in Cusco, depending on performance, availability, and fit.

Teaching in Peru
What are the requirements to teach English in Peru?
To teach English in Peru you’ll need:
– TEFL certification or 3+ years of teaching experience
– to be a native English speaker, or a non-native speaker with a native levelA Bachelor’s degree is NOT required, but is preferred by some employers.
Do I need a degree to teach English in Peru?
A Bachelor’s degree is preferred by some employers but is not a strict requirement.
What type of visa do I need to teach English in Peru?
Most nationalities don’t require a visa to enter the country, and you’ll automatically receive an entry stamp at immigration valid for up to 183 days. (Immigration officials typically issue a shorter, 90 day visa unless you politely request one for 183 days!) For a few nationalities a visa IS required – please see our visas page for more information. Your passport needs to be valid for 6 months from your entry date into Peru, and you may need to show proof of onward travel.
At immigration you’ll receive a tourist card, which you need to present again at departure. You should state “tourism” as the purpose of your trip. If you state “study”, you may have to pay for a special visa, which is not necessary, as our TEFL course falls under the category of Educational Tourism.
Some teachers choose to extend their stay beyond 90 (or 183) days by making a short trip to Bolivia, which is easily accessible, and then returning to Peru. (Please note that visa policies can change, so it’s important to check the latest rules.)
If you work in Peru after the course, your employer will normally help you with the work visa process – this will depend on the length of your contract and the benefits provided.
What paperwork do I need to bring to teach English in Peru?
You’ll need:
