Yes. You’ll complete 6 hours of solo teaching with real Vietnamese students in local schools, as well as 6 hours observing experienced teachers.

Before your solo teaching, you’ll also complete a full day of peer teaching, where you’ll teach your classmates and receive feedback from your trainer.

Yes, the course trains you how to teach both adults and young learners. You’ll learn core teaching skills applicable to all age groups, along with specific strategies for teaching young learners.

Assessment is practical and runs throughout the course.

You’ll prepare and deliver lessons, take part in peer teaching and complete 6 hours of solo teaching with Vietnamese students in real schools. Your teaching and lesson planning are assessed, with feedback from your trainers to help you improve as the course progresses.

No – TEFL courses show you how to teach without needing to know the language of your students. If you go on to teach in an English speaking country, you’ll probably have classes of mixed nationality/first language, so using the students’ first language isn’t an option anyway!

The Vietnam programme is designed for people who want to qualify and then move directly into teaching in Vietnam.

Ninja Teacher currently accepts applicants who have a Bachelor’s degree and hold a passport from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand.

You’ll also need to be able to obtain a clean criminal background check and meet the health requirements for a Vietnamese work permit.

Job placement is a major part of the programme.

During the final part of the course you’ll prepare your teaching CV, learn about the Vietnamese employment market and meet established employers recruiting teachers.

You’ll also have individual career coaching to discuss the type of role and location you’re looking for. Ninja Teacher can then submit your application directly to suitable schools and support you through interviews, demonstration lessons and job offers.

The course tends to get fully booked up to two or three months in advance, so it’s best to book as early as you can.

Course groups have up to around 16 trainees, giving you a ready-made group of people arriving in Vietnam and starting the same experience at the same time.

You’ll meet your classmates during the orientation and welcome activities and can stay connected with the wider Ninja Teacher community after the course.

For your day-to-day training at the centre, comfortable casual clothing is fine.

For school observations and teaching practice, you’ll need to dress professionally. In Vietnam, teachers are generally expected to wear conservative, business-casual clothing, for example, smart trousers and a collared shirt, or a suitable dress, skirt or trousers with a smart top. Closed-toe shoes are a good idea, and any visible tattoos may need to be covered when teaching.

You’ll receive access to Ninja Teacher’s online portal before the classroom course begins. This includes pre-arrival information, course preparation and supplementary resources to help you get ready for both the training and your move to Vietnam.

Ninja Teacher will guide you through the visa process before you travel, including which visa to apply for and the documents you’ll need to prepare.

They’ll also advise you on the legalisation/authentication of documents needed for teaching in Vietnam, including your degree and criminal background check, so that you arrive with the correct paperwork for the later work permit process.

Once you find a teaching position after the course, your employer will normally assist with the work permit and longer-term visa arrangements.

Because Vietnamese visa requirements can change, you’ll receive up-to-date guidance based on your circumstances before you travel.

Yes. To teach English in Vietnam as a non-native speaker, you must be able to show that you have a certified English level of C1 or higher, an IELTS score of 7, or equivalent.

Most full-time English teaching jobs require 20 to 30 classroom teaching hours per week. This can be during the day, in the evenings and at weekends, with at least one day off per week, depending on the employer. Paid holiday and sick leave also depend on the employer. Teaching contracts can be up to 2 years (renewable) and you’ll typically need to commit for a minimum of 3 months.

The majority of job opportunities are in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi and the surrounding areas, in privately owned English language schools, government schools and tertiary institutions. Private tutoring and teaching onsite at businesses are also common. There are also plenty of opportunities in smaller, regional cities and in more rural locations.

A typical salary for foreign ESL teachers is between $1700 and $2000 net per month, or $17 to $20 net per hour.

Many teachers find that the relatively low cost of living in Vietnam allows them to save a good portion of their income, depending on lifestyle and spending habits.
